Three Generations...and Counting
My father, Sam Bograd, and his brother Dave opened the doors of their brand new furniture store on August 1, 1930 at the depth of the Great Depression. Not surprisingly, more than a few people thought that the Bograd Brothers wouldn’t be around for very long. They couldn’t have been more wrong.
Today, more than eight decades and three generations of service later, not only is @Bograds’ still going strong, it is widely recognized as one of the nation’s great fine furniture stores – offering hands-on family management, friendly and knowledgeable service, the best manufacturers and the widest selection available.
@Bograds’ is proud to continue to serve in some cases second- and third-generations of our loyal customers, and just as proud to encourage newcomers to the world of @Bograds’. Put in this perspective, looking back at a rich past is not so different from looking forward to a bright future.
From Sam and Dave to Marcia, Mark and me, the @Bograds’ story is about family – yours and ours – and about making your home a more pleasant place to live.
Back in 2004, we published the inaugural issue of Joe Magazine. This link takes you to what was one of the most popular articles then and one that has continued to be read and reread by visitors to our website over the years. We have decided to leave it unchanged despite the fact that some of the details have changed and Mark is now with us for 15 years instead of 5. To be honest, what we really like is to see pictures of ourselves 10 years younger. We hope you’ll enjoy reading “How It All Began”.
I was born into the furniture business and it has always been a part of me. I’ve also been a number of other things– a caterer, anthropologist, and museum curator. These experiences have shaped me and influence the kind of retailer I am. I can’t just sell stuff. I only sell stuff I like… preferably from people I like to people I like. I understand that design is about personal preference and the ways people live… not about the way I want you to live.
If you want to know more about me, I have written a blog post entitled, How I got here. Click here to read it.
