How do you determine how many people can fit around a dining table?

I like the way that Don Wright of Wright Table Company figures it. For a round table, measure the diameter of the table and divide by eight. A 50″ round table seats six comfortably. A simple rule for rectangular dining tables is that a six foot dining table seats six; an eight foot dining table seats eight, etc. Obviously, the width of the dining chair can be a factor. Most dining chairs are between 20-24″ wide.
